ORBITS - FILM INSTALLATION
Orbits is a new film work by Birds of Paradise Theatre Company directed by Rachel Drazek and featuring Portuguese dancer Diana Niepce which was made across the latter stages of the Covid 19 pandemic. It is a film about how we feel and what we experience when we lose something we have been in orbit or relationship with. How does this change affect our experience of ourselves?
Orbits began as a collaboration in early 2021 and was filmed by artist Hugo Glendinning in Lisbon December 2022.
The film will premiere with a week long installation at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh and will run from the 29th of April until the 5th of May 2023. The film duration is 42 minutes and will run on loop. Admission is free.
Normally when I have written for dance the music precedes the movement, or is at least is developed in conjunction with it. This was a very different process. With the film already shot and the rhythm of Diana’s improvisationary movements and interactions influencing the rhythm and duration of the piece my process was more akin to film scoring. It was about finding music to work with this unique rhythm, or in certain instances to work against it, about finding musical ways to support while providing moments of synchronisation and serindipity between movement and sound. The resulting soundtrack is both improvisatory and ambient in nature.
