Echoic Memory Vol. 1 EP
Since watching a performance of Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question nearly 20 years ago I have been fascinated by the idea of 3-D immersive sound: the trumpet sounding form the back of the hall, the woodwinds in full view in front of the audience, the strings off to the side hidden from view playing in an adjoining room. This was a kind of aural collage, the separation of individual elements which emanated from separate sources within the same aural space. I loved the way these different sounds brushed up against each other and to be in the middle of it all was thrilling.
I am equally thrilled that technology now exists which can replicate this live experience from the concert hall (or modern-day cinema) to anyone who owns a pair of stereo headphones, and I’m delighted that these three compositions from my Tekstura album have been chosen to make up the inaugural EP release on the unique Music for Headphones label in which the sounds of nature or the city rub shoulders with the musical textures placing the listener in the middle of immersive 360 degree sound.
Huge thanks to producer Steve Spiro (Talk Talk, Pet Shop Boys) for remixing these tracks using 360-degree binaural technology.
